The Centre 1980-1989
1980 A single copy of the newsletter was attached to the flagpole on each rally,
· The cost of being towed off a field by a four wheel drive vehicle was 25p
· At the National rally, South Essex ran the Sunday night social and Lawrence Clark, 7 year old son of Brian & Mavis, won first place in the childrens sports.for his age.
· 320 outfits attended the Charity rally which raised £2,700 in aid of Addenbrookes Kidney Patient Association.
1981 The embankment at Peterborough was a very popular rally and the rowing club named a brand new boat “The South Essex Centre”.
· An instruction was issued to Rally Marshals not to leave milk crates in the middle of the field where people can fall over them. Not a problem we have today!!!
· The National at Glanusk Park in Wales we won first prize in the Decorated car competion with St George and the Dragon.
· The “Miss South Essex Competition” was won by Alison Newell.
· The cancellation fee was raised from £1 to £2.
1982 90 outfits from South Essex attended the National at Sandringham, we gained another 2nd place in the decorated car competition.
· Again Lawrence Clark won the race in his age group, 4th year in succession.
· Tickets for the AGM Dinner dance were £7.60
1983 The centre celebrated its 21st Birthday with a rally at South Woodham Ferrers with 356 units attending.
· Megan Wright, was the first chairman to wear the Chairman’s chain of office.
1984 At the AGM it was suggested the Centre buy a computer for the use of Centre Officers. It was said “that many erstwhile committee members could well be put off standing by the prospect of having to master the use of a computer”.
· Kelly Pickard, granddaughter of Sid & Eve Pickard was Miss South Essex.
1985 South Essex ran the Friday night social at the National at Burghley Park. We also won the decorated car competition with “Beautiful Britain
· Karen Blows, daughter of Janet & Bob was Miss South Essex.
1986 It was agreed at the AGM that the cancellation fee be increased to £4.00.
· It was also agreed that the site fee be printed in the rally book wherever possible.
1987 The centre held it’s 25th birthday rally.
· won the decorated car competition at The National Rally that was held at Sandringham.
1988 The centre celebrated 2000 rallies at Bishops Hall Brentwood where a large contingent of Dutch caravanners attended.
· A cheque for £300 was presented to the Pony Riding for the disabled fund at Grange Farm.
· Miss South Essex was Nicki Pomroy
· Once again we won the decorated car competition at The National at Glanusk Park in Wales.
1989 The cost of the annual dinner was now £17 and was held at West Lodge Upminster.
· The Junior Committee organised rallies for Valentines, Easter, their own AGM and Halloween.
· For a time during the 1980’s the centre published, twice yearly, a magazine named “Rally”. This was in addition to the A4 style newsletter.
· Amanda Badger was elected Miss South Essex
